PARENT HELPERS

We actively welcome parent helpers to come and support us in school. We know many of you have skills and experience, which can really add to the pupils learning and experience during their time at our school. Over the years, we have had parents come and actively participate with a variety of tasks such as art or cooking and help us in areas such as hearing children read, holding a competition to launch our school library and supporting us on the school trips and visits.

Throughout the school year, we will publish requests for helpers in our weekly school newsletter, or you may hear directly about requests through your child’s class rep.

There is a requirement for schools to carry out a Disclosure and Barring (DBS) screening check for all staff and volunteers who have regular contact with children. All schools need to hold a register of the checks undertaken. In order for you to work in school as a volunteer, you will need to apply for an Enhanced DBS check by using the following link and log in details: https://disclosure.capitarvs.co.uk/cheqs/

Organisation Reference: ORLEANS Organisation Code: Schools2017

You will then need to bring to the school office your passport, driving licence and proof of address dated within the last 3 months so that they are able to verify your application. You will receive the certificate to your home address and need to bring the original in to the school office to check before you are able to volunteer.

Please be assured that all information will be treated in the strictest confidence and that these checks are only done in the best interests and safety of the children.

We have produced a Handbook for Volunteers which show the structure to which parents and other volunteers must adhere to when in school. Please click here to access the handbook or see the link at the bottom of this page.

Reading with children

Parents are actively encouraged to come into school each week to listen to children read, and it is great to see both mums and dads doing this. If you wish to volunteer please see your child's class teacher.  Please see attachments at the bottom of the page for additional information on helping with reading in school.

Extra-Curricular Activities

We would welcome parents to come and support our Extra-Curricular Activities.  If you are a Qualified Coach and could help run a club, please contact our Deputy Head, via the school office on 0208 892 1654.

Curriculum Enrichment

Each year we hold special weeks and days which are linked to our curriculum priorities.  We publish details of these events in our newsletters. If you wish to volunteer to help during one of these, please contact the school office on 020 8892 1654.

School Visits

When a class goes out on a school visit, we ask for parent helpers to accompany the children.  Class teachers will ask for volunteers when they write to parents prior to the trip, so please contact your class teacher (or your class rep) if you wish to help.

Please note: it is not always possible to take every parent who wishes to accompany a school visit.  Class teachers are responsible for finalising the list of parent helpers and may prioritise working parents who volunteer, as they cannot always be available to help in school.  We do not ask parents to accompany us on the Year Four Sleepover or the Years Five and Six residential trips.

Special Skills

If you are a parent or carer at Orleans and have a special skill or talent - please do let us know.  We may ask you to come in and talk to the children about it.
