How the curriculum is organised at Orleans Primary School

At Orleans, we plan to ensure that every child receives a broad, balanced curriculum. We design, structure and plan our curriculum to ensure children are not merely covering content but achieving a depth to their learning, moving beyond the point of initial mastery, enabling them to utilise and transfer their knowledge, skills and understanding within all areas of the curriculum. Teachers at Orleans plan rich, extended learning experiences so that the children have the opportunity to engage in meaningful learning – our children understand what they are learning but also why they are learning it.

We have designed, structured and planned our curriculum content with the aim of ensuring every child achieves academic and personal success, and develops a life-long love of learning, whatever their starting point.  At Orleans, we place high priority on ensuring children’s physical and mental well-being.

Our curriculum places importance on both core and foundation subjects. Each subject leader has a subject specialism and leads this subject, working alongside the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team to ensure high quality learning takes place, how well children are progressing in the subject throughout the school and what actions the school needs to take to improve the teaching and learning that children receive.

To find out more about each area of the curriculum, please visit the links at the side of this page. There you can find in-depth information about each subject, including curriculum maps for the year. You can also visit our YEAR GROUP PAGES for further information by year.

Our school Governors play an active role in ensuring the curriculum is inspiring, rich and challenging, providing children with the best possible education empowering them to be valuable and valued citizens who will contribute positively to our ever-changing world.

At Orleans, we aim for excellence in the delivery of our curriculum and for all our pupils to excel. We follow the National Curriculum, enriching it through well-thought-out strategies to engage our pupils and make the learning experience fun and exciting: creating motivated and enthusiastic learners.  We also plan visits out of school and visitors into school to support us in delivering an inspirational curriculum. We aim to develop lively, enquiring minds and a positive, confident attitude towards learning.

Our teachers plan in Year group teams to ensure there is parity of planned learning experiences.  The curriculum is enhanced by use of a wealth of resources and involvement of the local community. Each year we plan special theme weeks when we come away from the usual curriculum and focus on a specific subject. This gives children the opportunity to apply the skills they have learnt in reading, writing and mathematics throughout the week.
