ART AND DESIGN AT ORLEANS PRIMARY SCHOOL
At Orleans pupils in Reception, KS1 and KS2 use the Kapow Primary’s Art and design scheme of work to develop and inspire their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. Units of lessons are sequential, allowing children to build their skills and knowledge, applying them to a range of outcomes. Key skills are revisited across each year group with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model.
Creativity and independent learning is embedded into the units by supporting children to make their own creative choices and decisions, so their art outcomes will be knowledge-rich, unique and personal.
The Kapow Primary Art Scheme of work is designed with five strands that run throughout…
- Generating ideas
- Using sketchbooks
- Making skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
- Knowledge of artists
- Evaluating and analysing
Opportunities are prioritised for all pupils to engage in additional art and design activities through cross curricular links in all subjects and with extra-curricular activities such as trips and workshops.
In the Early Years children have daily opportunities as part of their continuous provision to explore and develop their independent and individual art and design skills through the curriculum area of ‘Expressive arts and design’. Pupils use their learning journey books throughout the EYFS and then in Year 1 begin to use their sketchbooks which document their art learning journey throughout their time at Orleans.
DT AT ORLEANS PRIMARY SCHOOL
Our DT curriculum aims to inspire pupils to innovative and creative thinkers who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through ideation, creation, and evaluation. We want pupils to take risks, through drafting design concepts, modelling, and testing and to be reflective learners who evaluate their own work as well as others. We build awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage our children to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements. Our curriculum targets 5 main strands of Design and Technology: Design, Make, Evaluate, Technical Knowledge and Cooking/Nutrition. Within this, children are developing their skills in six key areas: Mechanisms, Structures, Textiles, Cooking and Nutrition (food), Electrical systems (KS2) and Digital World (KS2).
