Welcome to Year 4

Year 4 is an exciting year full of curiosity, creativity, and discovery. Our curriculum is designed to inspire children, helping them build confidence, develop new skills, and explore the world around them.

English & Reading
Children will enjoy a rich variety of stories, from Leon and the Place Between and The Great Kapok Tree to Norse myths, Varjak Paw, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Through these texts, they develop reading, writing, and comprehension skills while exploring themes of adventure, empathy, and resilience.

Mathematics
Maths lessons build on core skills, including place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Pupils explore fractions, time, decimals, and measures, before moving on to geometry, symmetry, and patterns. Problem-solving and reasoning are central throughout the year.

Science
Science encourages curiosity and hands-on learning. Children study animals, digestion, electricity, habitats, materials, sound, and energy, making connections across topics and seeing how science relates to everyday life.

Computing
Children learn to stay safe online, explore computer networks, and develop coding skills using Scratch and HTML. Typing, computational thinking, and collaborative projects give pupils confidence in digital skills.

History & Geography
History lessons explore childhood through time, British invasions, and the achievements of the Ancient Maya. Geography focuses on rainforests, food origins, and rivers, helping children understand people, places, and the environment.

PE & Sport
PE develops fitness, coordination, and teamwork through swimming, dance, gymnastics, golf, rounders, handball, netball, cricket, and athletics.

Art, Design & Technology
Art encourages creativity through drawing, painting, textiles, and mixed media. In design and technology, pupils design and make structures, slingshot cars, and torches, combining imagination with practical skills.

Religion & World Views
Children explore key questions about beliefs, sacred texts, and moral values, developing understanding, empathy, and respect for different traditions.

French
French lessons cover everyday communication, including describing people, clothing, weather, food, numbers, and cultural activities such as the Eurovision Song Contest.

Music
Music lessons develop rhythm, pitch, composition, and performance skills. Children enjoy recorder lessons, singing, and exploring programme music like Peter & the Wolf.

PSHE
PSHE lessons support children’s personal growth, covering families, relationships, health, wellbeing, safety, citizenship, and economic awareness.
